Welcome to the Arlington Youth Lacrosse Club (AYLC). Here you will find the answers to most questions regarding lacrosse in Arlington, Northern Virginia, and the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League (NVYLL).
AYLC is a non-profit, volunteer run orginization that provides lacrosse opportunities for boys and girls ages 5-15. We are a member of the NVYLL which organizes Spring lacrosse games at various age groups and ability levels throught the Northern Virginia region. For more info go http://nvyll.org
In addition to fielding teams in the NVYLL, we provide a "house" league and clinic in the Spring for the youngest kids.
We also team up with local high schools and Colleges to provide clinics throughout the year, set up summer "pick-up" games, and provide experienced players with opportunites to play in small sided games during the fall and winter at various tournaments and leagues.
If you have a BOY, here is what to expect:
Age bracket are 2 year segments with the cutoff date being September 1st for the Fall and following Spring.
6U we usually run a once a week station based clinic to introduce them to the game. It is usually Sunday afternoon. After the first few weeks the boys will start playing 3v3 game like drills. Full pads and a real stick are required. (no mini or fiddle sticks)
8U we run our own house league. Teams are small-sided (12-15 players) and play against other Arlington teams in a 7 v 7 format on weekends. Same time, same place each week with either 1 or 2 weeknight practices. Teams are balanced to ensure equal competition. Everyone makes a team.
Some years we have enough interest to enter an 8U team in the NVYLL. To be on this team you must tryout and it involes traveling to other towns for games on Saturdays along with multiple weekday practices. These are usually the more experienced players and requires a committment to attend games in the event of another sports conflict.
10U all boys play on teams enterend in the NVYLL. Teams are formed after several days of assesments (otherwise known as tryouts, except everyone makes a team). The levels are A, Upper B (UB) and Lower B (LB). The A team is usually comprised of boys who play year round and/or are the older side of the age bracket. Lower B teams are usually beginners. When we have more than 3 teams we will have multiple teams in either UB or LB which must be balanced so we hold a draft after assessments.
12U and 14U are run the same as 10U except we have less and less beginners , so the LB teams are not just beginners and the level of play is higher than at the younger age group.
If you have a Girl:
Girls divisions are under the following grade-based divisions: High School Division – GHS; Grades 7th and 8th – G78; Grades 5th and 6th – G56; Grades 3rd and 4th – G34; and Grades Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd – GK2. All our girl teams will play within the NVYLL.
Both boys and girls age divisions are further divided into levels of play. Teams are divided into A (top level), Upper B (UB), and Lower B (LB) levels at the G78, G56 and G34 divisions. GK2 teams play at the same level.
G78, G56 and G34 divisions play full field, while some G34 and all GK2 plays on a modified field.
Modified field (MF) is approximately a minimum of 60 yards long and 35 yards wide with a painted end line and mid-field line. Fields may be set up to run across 1⁄2 of an existing NFHS full size regulation field. Creases will be designated 5 yards from each baseline. Teams will be limited to eight (8) players on the field at a time (i.e. 8 vs. 8). The 8 players will be 2 attack, 3 midfielders, 2 defensemen, and a goalie. To remain on-sides, a team must have a total of three (3) players on the defensive end and two (2) players on the offensive end of the field. Teams have the option to play with a goalie or without one, but may not use a shooting barrier in place of a goalie.
Roster size for G78, G56 and G34 divisions run from a maximum of 24 to a minimum of 16 players. GK2 MF girls’ team sizes are anywhere from 12 to 18 players.
Tryouts, Assessments, and Practices
Annual tryouts and evaluation for teams will be held before the season to allow an equal opportunity to participate. Tryouts for A level will be conducted. Assessments of all other players will be done to draft within UB and LB levels to build teams of equal ability.
Girls practices will be twice a week with the Girls’ games scheduled in Sunday time slots.
The girls will play under the US Lacrosse Women’s Rule Book and the US Lacrosse Youth Girls’ rules govern NVYLL girls’ youth play, except as amended by the league.
Checking of sticks, is different at the various divisions:
Full Check - G78 A
Modified Check - G78 UB, G78 LB, G56 A, G56 UB, G56 LB. ‘Modified checking’, allows for a downward motion away from the body when the ball carrier’s entire stick is below her shoulders.
No Checking - G34 and GK2
